Abu Walid and his Tent

Abu Walid is originally from Syria. Whenever he came to class Abu Walid would bring something for us. One day it was a carton of chocolate milk, another day, a Snickers bar. By the end of the week he’d begun serenading Emma, the project manager, with the theme tune from Titanic. This is his voice scoring the film and his poem in subtitles. In this video poem, Abu Walid expresses his feelings about his “safe space” and “home” tent within a desperate refugee camp. The film is revealing of the trauma and depression felt by many residents of the camp, and the human desire to build a home wherever we find ourself.
