CalaisSPEAKS is a project with Syrian refugees that began in The Jungle camp in Calais in 2015.
During a week-long programme last September, fifteen students made a number of films. Some showed the reality of living the camp, others told their personal stories. Of the fifteen students, a core group of eight emerged with whom WFC has maintained contact. As their journey’s have progressed, these grassroots filmmakers have continued making films.
In February 2016, WFC invited the four who had made it to Britain to come to London for WFC’s closing event. A selection of films was screened and one filmmaker, Abu Waleed, sang. It was incredibly moving. Of the other core team members, three are now in Germany and one is in Austria. WFC intends to continue following the journey of these men as they slowly re-build their lives in new countries and eventually perhaps, even fulfill their dreams of returning home.
