The late 90’s Rap scene changed in Cape Town when a few rappers decided to spit rhymes in their Xhosa mother tongue and infused them with the popular lingo. iSpaza, in laymans terms, is HipHop contextualised here in the getto. We took rap that was done in English and we did it in Xhosa. Then we named it Spaza. Spaza started as a way of rebelling against Englisth Rap. Because of the language, because now, all of a sudden, it’s easy for everyone to identify due to knowing Xhosa, it’s easy for you to express yourself. Spaza defines the kind of music that is originally from eKasi. Vernacular is from eKasi. Spaza has improved since it started. In the past years, Spaza was something new. Even at shows, people would get surprised when you performed. But now, each and every corner you pass, in phones and shops, they listen to Spaza music. People know and understand Spaza music. So I would say this genre of music has grown. Did you know? The word “Spaza” orignally stood for informal shops/kiosks found in townships that have been a source of home essentials for the community.
